Oganesson was identified in 2002 by a team composed of Russian scientists at Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, Dubna and American scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

It was produced by the bombardment of californium with calcium.

Ununoctium was the temporary IUPAC systematic element name.
